VOTE YES to Con-Con in 2017:
Making the most of our state constitution

With all three branches of the federal government changing drastically, New Yorkers cannot rely on federal protections anymore. We must make sure our laws mirror New York’s ideals. We need to reinforce our state constitution NOW!

WHAT IS IT?

THE CON CON

Much like the federal Constitutional Convention that our founding fathers held in Philadelphia in 1787, a State Con Con consists of elected delegates from each New York Senate district heading to Albany to propose changes to our constitution. These proposed amendments then get presented to the voters on the ballot, and will be approved or rejected by a popular vote.

In short, this is a once-in-a-generation chance to make fast-tracked changes to our constitution, bypassing our lethargic lawmakers and putting issues at the hands of the people.

The opportunity to vote for a Constitutional Convention only comes around every 20 years. It’s a safeguard that our state’s founding fathers put into our original constitution to ensure that the people had a last line of defense against lawmakers who weren’t acting in favor of the will of the people.

Did you know that there are two ways to make changes to the New York State Constitution?

The first way is the regular old route, in which legislation is proposed, we lobby our lawmakers to pass or reject it, it gets stuck in gridlock in Albany, and it’s a toss-up as to whether or not it will ever get ratified.
The second way is totally unknown to most people, because it’s a unique opportunity that only comes around every 20 years. It’s called the New York State Constitutional Convention (nicknamed the “Con Con”).

The Con Con doesn’t happen automatically—we must first vote YES to have one. The last time NY voters had the opportunity to vote on this was in 1997,

but this November 2017, it will be Question 1 on your ballot, and we want you to vote yes.
